Fight Fear

Fear paralyzes. Fear debilitates. And fear can prevent you from achieving your full potentials.

Fear is a potent human emotion and contrary to what many believe, it s a matter of the head and not the mind. Fear is a triggered when a small almond shaped organ sitting deep in the centre of your brain, the amygdala , releases a large amount of adrenaline and cortisol to the blood stream. The sudden gush of these two powerful chemical has an immediate effect to the body’s central nervous system. Heart beat and blood pressure increases. The pupil dilates to take in more light. The body’s muscles tighten. All this response, popularly known as the “fight or flee”, is in-built, natural and has kept the human species alive for centuries.

The human race, starting out in the plains of east Africa tens of thousands years ago faced real danger. They had every reason to fear ending up as lunch or dinner of some wild beast. Danger was ever present. Being hunter-gatherers every endeavor was risky. They neither had the tools nor the time to do statistical study of risk. They did not have board meetings to discuss their fears. They did not hire consultants to manage their risks. They developed an automatic response to fear and that response being constructive had been passed through the ages to the modern man.

If you are reading this, the chances that you hunt with spears for your lunch are nil. We do not fear being eaten by a lion when we go the office’s cafeteria for lunch. Some real, some imagined and all robs us from life’s joy.
Researchers have found that there are only three in-built fears in humans; the fear of falling down, fear of loud noises and fear of snakes. These three fears are hard-wired to us. The others are learned and/or fed to us by fear merchants.

Open the newspaper today and there pages and pages of news to scare us. The recent reporting of A(H1N1) flu virus is a good example. While the dangers of the virus are real, it is now being reported as an endemic capable to wipe the human race out of existence. Years before this was the avian flu, mad cow disease, West Nile virus, herpes and the list goes on and on. Switch on the TV and what you get. More often than not there are images that trigger fear flashing in front of our eyes. Why is this so?

Fear sells.

Despite living in an era where the life expectancies are higher than before, where every nation has shown progress, where many diseases that cause death, i.e. smallpox and measles are almost eradicated, we are more afraid than ever before.

We fear almost everything, from breakfast (which we suspect might contain cancer inducing chemicals) to being hit by an asteroid. While totally eliminating fear from our lives is not only impossible but potentially hazardous, we must manage it.

Fear unchecked is fear fed. To live a life that allows us to be all that we can be, we must manage our fears. There are many ways we can learn to do this and a simple and effective way is keeping a positive state of mind.

Learn to Let Go – Part 2

As we grow up, it becomes necessary to learn to let go of many things that we have taken on during our life. In Learn To Let Go – Part One we explored the main things that happen to us as we grow up and experience life. We lose family members who move or die; we start to collect memories and memorabilia; we begin to suffer mental, physical, and emotional illnesses; we have addictions and depression and learn about toxic, negative people; we see and experience abuse and sometimes our egos get in our way. To live life again, we need to re-evaluate what is really important to us and begin to get rid of the unimportant things.

LOVED ONES

This leads us to letting go of loved ones, not by death but by distance. If a child moves out of the family house to go to school, get married or start their own life, it is an unmistakable pain that is hard to get rid of. If a parent moves out of state after retirement, we feel abandoned and question why they had to go. Never thinking that it might be good for them, or cheaper or even better climate, we add that to out baggage. If a grandchild, a child of our dead son or daughter moves out of our home and into their own home, we again feel abandoned. We need to let go of loved ones who have a life of their on and are not making changes to hurt us but to better their own lives.

PREJUDICE

There are many types of prejudice in this world and each one is a different size and color baggage, but certainly, each one hinders your success. There are racial, sexual and spiritual prejudices. They are ideas that you struggle with and they take your concentration and your energy, so it is important to learn to let go of those prejudices.

DISAPPOINTMENTS

Things in our past can trigger emotions that make another piece of baggage. Past disappointments trigger emotions of failure. They make us feel as though we fell short of depending on our self. By holding onto disappointments, we can hurt our self-esteem and lower our capacity to improve ourselves. It is also very important to let go of disappointments.

MATERIAL POSSESSIONS

The biggest baggage many people have are old unused objects. They can be anything from knick-knacks and broken things to old clothes and outgrown things. When you have so many things to move to just dust, it is probably time to let go of some of the “junk”. Certainly any old broken objects, which you planned on fixing some day, need to trashed or donated for others to fix. Old, unused clothes that have not been worn in one year, needs to discarded. In an article titled “How to De-Clutter”, you can see many ideas on getting rid of material possessions.

Look at a rich man. Most of them keep accumulating. They have many houses and many cars. What do they do with them? Only they know why they need so much. Rare amongst the rich give away all they possess to needy. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are recent examples. Other wealthy persons keep accumulating till the end of their life but have no happiness of mind. Is such accumulation of any use? We earn money and buy things to get peace. The end is not money but peace and comfort.

Learn to Let Go – Part 1

Everyone in the world has faced, at one time or the other, a period where they need to learn to let go. Whether it is a physical object or material goods, emotional attachment or love, or a spiritual trap, it is very important to free yourself of extra baggage. When we are young, we start to accumulate baggage. That baggage includes misbehaviors, fears, and secrets. As we grow into young adults, we start to become secretive about out friends and activities, and that becomes our baggage. As we date, marry and grow old, we find that we add to our baggage. Before we realize it, we have accumulated a ton of old baggage that has started wearing us down and out.

Some of the biggest baggage that we carry includes things that we don’t even think about anymore. Those things, however, need to be addressed and eliminated the best way that we know how. Some of the baggage includes the following.

1. Letting go of fear
2. Letting go of old relationships
3. Letting go of grief
4. Letting go of loved ones
5. Letting go of disappointments
6. Letting go prejudice
7. Letting go of material possessions
8. Letting go of depression
9. Letting go of abuse
10. Letting go of negative energy
11. Letting go of addictions
12. Letting go of ego

Can we look at all these in detail to understand more about how to let them go? You may not be able to let them go at a stroke. The process may be slow and some of them many be very difficult to let go. Also this will be different from person to person. You may let go something quickly while a friend of yours may find the same thing very difficult. Let us look at these one after another.

Fear

The first thing that we need to let go of is FEAR. Fear keeps us locked into the past because we are afraid of changing. We might have fear of changing or doing something new that we aren’t familiar with like sports or professional encounters. We might be afraid of flying, driving, dating, riding elevators or amusement rides or even public speaking. Sometimes people even have a few of bad health or dying. Fear can paralyze a person, so the first thing that we need to try to do is let go of the baggage we carry in the form of fears.

Relationships

We need to let go of old relationships. Whether it is an old high school sweetheart or a childhood friend who marries and moves away, we need to let it go. Old relationships that linger often keep us from making new relationships and having new memories.

Grief

Someone who is gone is another fear that many people share. Letting go of grief is an enormous piece of baggage that we carry if we have ever lost a parent, spouse or child. Death itself can make the grief we carry seem unnatural and overwhelming. It is hard to get over the death of a loved one but we need to learn to let go the grief.

Because we have all faced periods in our life where we need to learn to let go, we have shoved them aside and they became baggage that we carry with us wherever we go. In part two of this article series, we will continue our exploration of the things that we need to learn are not important and begin learning to let go. Sometimes something that is important has also to be left, if that is giving us more pain. We will discuss more in the following articles.

What can you do to build your self-esteem?

Self esteem and confidence should not come from the way others perceive you. Self esteem and confidence must come from inside yourself. It is hard to change the way you think and feel about yourself overnight. However, by taking small steps everyday, you will gradually increase your level of self esteem and confidence. Here are three key tips to help you get the ball rolling to a new, more confidence you.

Tip One – Learn to destroy self defeating beliefs. You may believe that you are not as important as other people. If you truly believe this, you will start acting in ways that will make others believe the same. However, this belief pattern is not only destructive, it is simply not the case. You can learn how to break down self defeating beliefs by learning to speak to yourself in a positive way.

Start to tell yourself that you are a special person with rights, ideas and opinions that are just as valid as the next person. Try this little exercise. I want you to grab some paper and a pen. Over the next few days and weeks, write a list of fifty things that you like about yourself. What is your best feature? What is your favourite character trait? What are you good at? Keep the list safe where you can see it. Whenever you feel low, just read the list. It will help you to focus on the positive rather than the negative.

Tip Two – Look after your physical and mental well-being. The first step is simple but effective. Aim to sat aside time every day to eat three regular and healthy meals. This will help to maintain your level of energy and concentration throughout the day. Next, make sure you get enough sleep each night. Try to do something relaxing before you go to bed. This will help the stress of the day melt away. Set aside thirty minutes a day to exercise. This will help you to stay fit and toned. This in turn will help to give you more confidence about the way you look. Remember, walk tall and smile. If you smile, the world will learn to smile right back at you!

Tip Three – Do something fun! I want you to make a list of everything that interests you. What are your hobbies and interests? What are you passionate about? What new activities would you like to try but have never done before? Is there something that you would like to learn more about? If you need to help thinking of ideas, you can check out the library or just ask other people. Now, I want you to set aside just a few hours a week to do something for you. This will help you to meet new people and life will feel more satisfying and fun.

4 Hints For Mom to Reduce Stress at Christmas

Christmas is a time of joy and family togetherness. It is also a time of stress for a lot of moms out there.

Parties to plan, shopping to do, presents to wrap, cooking, baking, visiting, decorating … and trying to do it all with the good cheer the season deserves.

And all too often it’s all up to Mom to get it done. Make sure all the gifts have been gotten, the cards signed and stamped, the batches of cookies marked nuts, no nuts, no chocolate for those who must be careful with their holiday treats.

It is too easy to get caught up in the duties of the holiday and for Mom to forget the little things, the truly important things, about Christmas. So, from one busy Mom to another, here are some ideas to help us all get through this holiday with good cheer and great memories.

1. Christmas is about the joy of a promise kept. Not about shopping, or wrapping paper, or festive tins to nestle home-made goodies into. It’s the joy of that quiet moment in the night when a Savior was born, and all the world paused in peace and wonder.

Take a moment for yourself, Mom, to relive that miracle and appreciate all it has brought into your life. Take that moment to know that the tree, the presents, the food, could all be swept away in a moment, but in the circle of your family, the joy of Christmas is in your love for one another.

2. A happy holiday is one shared with a happy family. Perfection exists only in the magazines and on television. In reality, the cookies might burn, the goose get dried out, the green bean casserole be forgotten.

Let some stuff go, Mom. Forget perfectly folded napkins on the table and silver-bell charms on the wineglasses. Simplify your goal for the holiday meal so that you too can enjoy the pleasures of the season, instead of worrying and working to try to make everything “perfect.”

3. Christmas means togetherness. Our close family, our extended families, we all gather together to celebrate another year of being family and sharing love as love was shared with us so long ago.

Don’t go it alone, Mom. Spread the joy of holiday preparations to your children, your brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, parents, in-laws, everyone. The smallest tot can bring napkins to the table while older kids decorate tree and home, and the cheerful voices of your family in the kitchen as they stir and sample and set up will free you to admire how well everything comes together.

4. The greatest presents are fond memories. Going crazy hunting for the perfect gift might only lead to disappointment when it turns out to not be so perfect after all. With everyone together and enjoying the Christmas spirit, the greatest gift is already there.

Grab the camera and the photo album, Mom. Have different people taking pictures as you all enjoy looking at past Christmas joys and other family treasures. Tell the stories that make the older folks laugh and the younger kids stare in amazement. Share your favorite holiday memories as you create a new one to share next year.

Remember:

It’s not about the shopping, the presents, the paper, the food. It’s about a promise kept on a cold winter night and the warmth of a happy family brought together to celebrate.

“Perfect” is impossible – but wonderful is easy if you can let go of the idea of perfect. And when everything is wonderful, your happy family will declare you have given them the perfect Christmas anyway!

And, finally, remember most of all:

After it is all over, and the mess of paper is shin-deep on the floor and the dirty dishes are stacked high in the sink, when everyone has gone home and the kids are asleep, and it is just you, Mom, and the aftermath of the get-together …

It was a single, small moment in a cold winter’s night that started it all. There was a mess on the floor and work waiting to be done then too. But none of that was important because of the tiny miracle of a promise kept.

Having principles also means having boundaries. Being principled calls for self discipline; this is an essential attribute that determine ones destiny.

Do not be afraid to say no to any unproductive idea or venture. I believe that, a practical measure of developing self-discipline is avoiding bad company. I therefore don’t need to remind you that bad company distorts good morals.
