Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) And Depression (Thinking Errors)

The basic tenet of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is that what you think affects the way you feel. That is to say, if you think depressive thoughts then you will feel depressed. Conversely, if you manage to stop yourself thinking these thoughts, then your depression will lift.

As a psychiatrist who uses CBT techniques, my first step is to look for unhelpful patterns of thinking with my clients. Depressed people often think in particular ways that are very different from non-depressed people. These ways of thinking are called – in CBT language – “thinking errors”. Thinking errors help to cause and then maintain depression.

Numerous different thinking errors have been identified by CBT therapists over the years, and particular kinds of errors seem to predispose to particular psychological problems. In my experience as a therapist, the most common errors found in depression are “All-or-Nothing” thinking, “Mental Filtering”, “Disqualifying the Positive”, and “Personalising”.

“All-or-Nothing” thinking (also known in CBT circles as “Black-or-White” thinking) emphasises extremes and ignores the fact that most things in life are shades of grey rather than absolutes. For example, a person thinking in this way may play one poor game of tennis and then decide that he’s totally useless and give up forever. Or she may miss one yoga class and tell herself that as she’s fallen behind, there’s no point in going back. “All-or-Nothing” thinking sets very rigid rules for a person to live by – rules that, if broken (as they almost inevitably are!) can lead to the abandonment of enjoyable and worthwhile activities, and predispose the person to depression.

“Mental Filtering” is the term applied to the thinking patterns of people who “see” the world in a depressive way. People with this thinking error are biased in what they take notice of, and what they later remember. They will tend to notice (or, in CBT parlance, “attend”) to objects, people, or events that “fit-in” or confirm their previously held beliefs. For example, a depressed person who thinks that the world is an unpleasant place to live is more likely to remember the sad news stories as compared to a non-depressed person. A depressed person who thinks that they’re unlikeable will take extra notice of possible sleights from others. CBT theory posits that such mental filtering reinforces a person’s depression.

A closely related thinking error is termed “Disqualifying the Positive”. As well as focusing on the negative features of the world (and themselves), depressed people will often actively ignore (or “disqualify”) evidence to the contrary. A depressed person may well recall the person at the party who ignored them, but he will forget or downplay the others who chatted to him for hours. If a CBT therapist asked them about this, he will often say things like “oh, they just felt sorry for me”, thereby turning a positive interaction into something very different.

“Personalising” is the term given to a type of thinking that places the person at the centre of events. Such a view of the universe places a huge burden on the persons shoulders – they can feel responsible for all the bad things that happen. You may be “Personalising” when you feel guilty about not being able to help an unemployed friend keep his house, or when reading about climate change due to our Western way of living. There are factors beyond your control and for which you should not take responsibility. If you do, then CBT hypothesises that you will experience feelings of guilt, shame, and ultimately depression.

The above is a brief review of the common thinking errors that I have come across during the course of my work as a therapist in Edinburgh. Identifying such errors with the client is a first step on the way to identifying other, healthier, ways of thinking.

The Art and Science of Self Assurance

Starting into the meat of the word self-confidence, or even other terms like pride and human ability to confront a position, we conceive that there are many ways to in reality discover them, and while sureness seems to be an general term for many things, we know that it defers form one spot to another. For one thing, being able is something that most souls either do naturally or strive to do.

This is why the most critical thing to debate when trying to net self-confidence is that this is something that is intrinsic and it is built into the hominid mind. The great thing about this is that everyone has the might to be able and this is where you need to dig up once again that confidence and bring it out of the slew in your system of rules and out into the open. Self-assurance is also about being capable to another soul really well and respond to them. Trust is about impression, and the ability to conceive without a trace of a doubtfulness on your own abilities and the phrases that you are expression. You cannot be your own ego review, because this will set you up for a failure that you cannot be able to make do with.

The art and science of self assurance is really how you view yourself and the world around you and this is the really important thing that you need to look out for when you are trying to gain some sort of mental foothold back into your life. There are many problems that you can actually get rid off in your life, and sometimes all you need is a push in the right direction and of course, some self assurance that you will be able to take on these situations on your own.

It is all about mental projections, and how you are going to be able to see yourself within the next few years of your life. In the end of the day, having the ability to filter away all the negative aspects of your life, is really one of the best things you can do when trying to handle your own life. Surround yourself with as many positive people as you can and draw your energy from them. Then you will be able to think with more logic, it is always about how you conceive about yourself and that mental expulsion is the skin you will be donning when you are getting yourself into states of affairs.

The psyche is a unusual animal, and you would have known that it can pick up on things that you cannot, and because of this, you would be able to realize just what kind of power such psycho semantic forges like personal magnetism and self-assurance have on other people, helping you to take command of any situation. With this, you can determine where you are in life and be your own exponential catalyst to growth.

Does the Law of Attraction Really Exist? Or is it Just Some New Invention Designed to Empty Your Wallet?

The Universe of which we are a part is governed by a set of laws that are consistent, unchanging and unbreakable. These laws allow the world as we know it, to exist and grow. They are called the Universal Laws of Attraction, the Laws of Nature or Spiritual Laws.

They exist whether we understand and acknowledge them or not.

The Universal Laws of Attraction are at work in our lives, whether we are aware of them or not. Ignorance of them causes our lives to be less fulfilling than we want them to be.

You may experience financial difficulties, relationship problems, health or career issues.

You don’t want to experience these things in your life, and you certainly didn’t ask for them, but you attracted them by default rather than by design.

Lack of understanding of these natural laws means that we are constantly creating life by default.

Working with the Universal Law of Attraction allows you to attract success, financial freedom, balance, joy and fulfillment. You no longer have to exist in a life that is not what you want, fighting to be happy, secure and satisfied. By allowing the Universal Laws to work for you, you can create the reality of your dreams.

As these basic laws exist and operate all the time in our lives, we may as well learn how to use the Universal Law of Attraction to our advantage.

Just think of the chaos that would exist if we didn’t understand about the Law of Gravity, which is another one of the Universal Laws. If we didn’t understand that things will always fall down (not up) when dropped, there would be lots of broken items in the world! The Law of Gravity always exists and applies 100% of the time; it cannot be changed – this is the way it is.

The Law of Attraction is always at work in your life, whether you understand it or not, whether you believe it or not. It’s just “there”, a bit like the air we breathe and take for granted.

It can work for you and it can work against you; it can work to enrich your life and allow you to be happy, or it can work to make life difficult for you and cause you to be miserable. The good news about this fact is that you are in control of which way the Law of Attraction works in your life.

The Law of Attraction has been understood for thousands of years, but those who understood its power did not want everyone to have access to learning about it, and so they kept it secret. Then the film and book by Rhonda Byrne, The Secret, burst upon the world and thousands of ordinary folk started to research and understand about the Law of Attraction.

Today, millions of people all around the world are putting the Law into practice in their lives. There are hundreds of books, thousands of websites and chat rooms devoted to the study of the Law of Attraction, or LOA, as it has become known.

Find out how to make the Law of Attraction work for you, just click here.Article Source:http://www.articlesbase.com/self-help-articles/does-the-law-of-attraction-really-exist-or-is-it-just-some-new-invention-designed-to-empty-your-wallet-1383307.html

A History of Subliminal Messages

If you are not familiar with subliminal messages, as a basic definition the phrase “subliminal” comes from the Latin of “sub” and “limen”, which literally translates as “below threshold”.

This gives a clue to its meaning – and it directly means information which is below the threshold of our perception.

The Growth of Subliminal Messaging

Traditionally subliminal messages are thought of as video based. Indeed, most early experiments involved displaying flashing text subliminals over a piece of video. These types of messages have been used in advertising and also heavily in politics, and despite being illegal now they are still used. It was only last year that an inquiry was held into McDonalds using a subliminal advert of the food network – for just one frame their golden arches logo was displayed.

All sorts of tests were done into subliminal messages – the most famous being the movie theatre study by James Vicary. He displayed 2 subliminal messages to audiences in a movie theatre during the trailers. One said “eat more popcorn” the other saying “drink coca cola”. His results claimed that popcorn and coca cola sales doubled – and these results really boosted the awareness of subliminal perception.

Over the next few years guidelines were set by the American government and American advertising standards that due to the unfair, and potentially negative, manipulative power of subliminals to influence the human mind without consent they were to be banned from TV shows, and especially TV advertising.

Subliminal Messages for Personal Development

These changes in the use of subliminal messages led to it taking a back seat and the media surrounding subliminal learning went quiet for a few years.

But then, with the acceleration of new technology people began to use subliminals for their own personal use. Instead of subliminal videos, people made their own subliminal audio – subliminal messages back-masked in music, or played at a higher sound frequency – so instead of flashing text it was a verbal subliminal command, but it was still hidden from regular hearing, hence it was still subliminal.

It was still illegal (and still is) to use them on other people without their consent. However, now, instead of making manipulative messages people were making their own messages – positive messages to help them develop and improve in key areas of their life.

Soon people began to report great results with this method of subliminal audio. Losing weight, quitting smoking, developing confidence, enhancing their memories and learning capacity and so on.

The popularity of subliminal messaging increased dramatically through the 80s and 90s, even with celebrities the likes of Stephen Speilberg, Tiger Woods, and self motivation guru Anthony Robbins advocating their use – and claiming to of used them for their own personal development too.

Now they are a part of mainstream society – you can buy subliminal audio all over the internet, with unique messages made for almost any personal development niche you could want to pursue. It really is becoming fast acknowledged as a powerful method of development, both due to the variety of albums you can get or make, and the almost effortless nature of it.

What is Mind Power – Unleash Your Full Potential

The mind is indeed the powerhouse of the whole body. Aside from the brain being a thinking tool, it is an endless source of power for health and life benefits. As an individual, you must be knowledgeable on what is mind power and its full potential.

The brain is more than just a cluster of cells responsible for simple muscle reflexes. It is also a memory storage that can process up to quadrillion bits of information that even modern computers can’t do. There is an untapped resource in every human’s brain and for us to gain full benefit of its ability, we must know how to put it to good use.

The mind has the power control the body’s wellness. Ever wonder why positive people tend to be healthier people in this planet? It is because the positive thoughts signal the mind to release good hormones to the body. Thinking happy thoughts is the best anesthesia to cringing pain.

Negative thoughts create bad effects to the body’s wellness. It triggers the brain to alter the body’s chemistry. If you are already sick. Negative thoughts put on stress and worsen your physical condition. This is one reason why doctors never allow bad news to be heard by patients with grave illnesses. If possible, they want sick patients to be as comfortable as possible.

The placebo effect is another testament of the ability of mind power. Doctors who know what is mind power sometimes administer pseudo treatments to patients with stress-related or psychogenic disorders. The medicine is unreliable but the “medicine” administration gives peace of mind to the patient that the brain clams the body and comforts the body.

Mind power is also helpful when you are planning for your future. The process is called mind conditioning and it involves exercising the subconscious to believe that the things you want is already achieved. You condition your mind that you can indeed finish your current College course. Mind conditioning adds positive encouragement to our goals so that the task appears easy. What you perceive becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Mind power is also useful in conquering difficulties. The power of the mind contributes gravely in confronting the problems and putting them down. People who face problems with an unconditioned mind tend to pity themselves. This process makes them unproductive. The best way to face difficulty is by giving full concentration upon the subject matter and never allows it to rule your life. It is a simple task of mind over matter.

If you open yourself to the power of the mind, you’ll see that you’ll appreciate the world more clearly. Aside from physical exercise, put on mental exercises to stretch those brain muscles. Divulge in brainteasers like crosswords, sudoku, and scrabble once in a while. Also eat protein rich foods which are friendly to brain regeneration.

What is mind power? It is the use of the brain in order to have a better enjoyment of life. It is our wish that you strive in making life more enjoyable by thinking good thoughts.

Powers of the Mind – Unleash Concealed Ability

Many people do not know the concealed powers of the mind and the benefits that they can get from it. Maybe that includes even you. What is mind power? It is basically the use of the subconscious to command the body’s chemistry and structure bringing health and memory enhancement.

Mind power is evident in sick patients who are given placebo tablets. The tablets are just candies without any medicinal properties but surprisingly, they do their job of healing the ill. Why so? It’s because the brain is doing the healing. The belief that the tablets can heal them does the trick.

Ever heard of faith healing? The quack doctors uses faith and divine intervention as an excuse that they can heal any sick person who just believe. In reality, the quack doctors did not do anything. The sick patient’s strong belief that he is already healed makes the brain send biological signals all over the body of the perceived healing. From a subconscious thought, it became a reality.

This is one reason why visionaries or persons who have goals visualize and claim that a good thing has already happened to them. The whole process itself is a feel good experience that even though the goal will or will not be pursued, the positive feeling are felt.

Everyone wants to be someone in the future. You might want to be a doctor, lawyer, or teacher. You must motivate yourself to follow your dreams. Visualize yourself wearing that white gown and giving medical advices to your patients. You will find out that your goal is easier to achieve with a motivation rather than a blank mind. Be obsessed with your dream but never lose a touch of the reality. If you know that you can do it and it is physically possible, there should be nothing that can stop you to achieve it.

The powers of the mind do not mean that you live in a world of fantasy. It does not mean that you will become Superman just because you believe that you are the superhero. Mind power is all about thinking and rooting your ground on what is possible. You would not think of something that is not attainable.

Mind power is all about putting positive stress on yourself. It is about putting pressure upon your body to do what needs to be done. Nobody wants to hurt the body by going to the gym everyday and lift the exercise equipments but if you can visualize yourself in the mirror with a buffed and toned body, you are more motivated to continue with the deed despite the pain.

Never be content in your present position. You are born in this earth to dream and catch it. Present any possibilities. Use the powers of the mind to get what you want. A similar thought is presented by Rhonda Byrne in her phenomenal book “The Secret” wherein she relates how the law of attraction can change one’s lives. You may or may not believe the contents of the book but you must admit that a little positivity plus dreaming does big changes for your life.

Achievement – Indicators of People Who Succeed And Become an Influence in Life

In order to be a force to be reckoned with in society, you need to take serious steps to reach into your inner being. Realize that you came into existence for a particular reason and not just to add to numbers. People who strive to achieve success are visionary in nature and focused to see their dreams come to pass.

Equally important is that a visionary individual must also be a starter many times. Sometimes in life things fail to work out thus prepare yourself psychologically to pull yourself up again. Keep trying and you are bound to achieve success in whatever you pursue in life. We dream of a better tomorrow but we do not do anything about it and hence our dreams remain just that, dreams.

Starters are the individuals who have defeated the tendency of procrastination and fear. They believe in self motivation and hence do not wait for someone else to trigger them into action. Rather than being copy cats, successful people are innovators. Winners after dreaming they wake up and bring the dream to open manifestation.

Achievers are able to galvanize others to attain a common purpose and mission. This kind of initiative individuals, are the ones that borne leadership qualities and thus their own personal development. Ask yourself this, what can I do to bring about a better tomorrow? Keep in mind that you hold the key to your destiny, therefore make use it appropriately.

Successful people are usually not the strongest, nor are they the most intelligent individuals but rather they are those who are receptive to change and act rather than wait for conditions to be favorable.

Keys To Reinvent Your Life

Usually in midlife there are some major events that occur that trigger the need for you to reinvent your life.
Here are some guiding principles that will be your constant companions in this life reinvention project that you are going through.

1. You are an amazing person of resource, power and strength: Repeat that statement and make it your mantra. You may feel a little beat up and you may not know it, but I am here to tell you that I know that you are an amazing person. How do I know? I know because I know that you have an Inner Genius within you that you may not have fully explored.

2. Upgrade your strengths, delegate your weaknesses: Our educational system has taught us to fix our weaknesses. Yet, they are not fixable as weaknesses. Would you try to fix the foundation on a house that is crumbling and not fix up the rest of the house?  A better investment of your time is to focus on your strengths and leverage them. Your strengths are what make you unique. Learn to delegate your weaknesses and focus on your strengths. As you focus on your strengths, you will feel good about yourself and as you feel good about yourself, you will find more and more things to feel good about.

3.You are the most interesting person in your life. This is a time to discover yourself more fully. Get interested in yourself. Get to know yourself intimately. In fact, fall in love with yourself as you discover how amazing and wonderful you are. Know who you are and what makes you tick. Know your values: At this stage in your life, knowing yourself is the best investment of your time and energy. Learn your values and know what you stand for. And then, stand up for those values. Know what makes you tick and use that to your advantage.

4. Forgive yourself; forgive others: At midlife, if you have no one to forgive, you must be a saint! However, if you think about certain people in your life and you do  not feel all warm and glowy about them, do not fret. I am not asking you to feel warm and glowy about them. Just let go of the baggage about them in your mind. Lighten up! This is a time in your life when depression and anxiety can take a hold of you and it may be difficult to shake loose. Focus on letting go of what does not serve you. You are worth it. Forgiveness, as you know, is really not about the other person. It is about you. It is about you letting go of what no longer serves you. It also has health benefits.

5. Accept the Journey: Your life is not a final destination. It is a moving destination. When you get to one destination, resting on your laurels is not permitted for any significant length of time. You just have to set another destination as a goal. Accomplishment is absolutely wonderful, but the way our brain works, it always wants to work towards something. Leverage that and look for another journey. The joy is in the journey. Accept that your life is a journey and enjoy the ride!

As you accept each of these facts, you will make your journey easier. Really, reinventing your life is a process and a journey of discovery and exploration. Enjoy it!

Aliveness, the Key and the Secret

Are you ready…
…To step into your greatness?

What is it that you must be and do to feel fully alive?

We all yearn for aliveness. It is essentially what our personal journey in life is about. To feel and be fully alive.

Aliveness is the experience and the expression of the Life Force flowing through you. It is the true energy of being.

What aliveness is not…

Aliveness is not adrenaline. Adrenaline is the depleting and unsustainable energy of stress.

The excitement of adrenaline is often mistaken for aliveness. It is a powerful energy source for sure but over time it tears you down rather than builds you up.

Adrenalin is usually based in fear, no matter how unconscious that fear may be. It will pump you up and get you ready to fight tigers. But in reality there are rarely tigers to fight.

Adrenalin is triggered in our daily lives when we forget who we really are. We then lose connection with ourselves and look outside for answers.

As a result we shift into adrenaline based motivations and behaviors. We feel a sense of urgency. We become motivated by “shoulds.” We attempt to force situations and control outcomes or the opinions and behaviors of others. We become wired and tired.

Adrenaline is addictive. And it is burn out energy when used as a regular energy source.

Back to aliveness…

The Life Force – the true energy of being – is the vitalizing and renewing energy of life. And it is always available to us. It never runs out.

We have access to this energy and experience aliveness to the degree that we remember who we really are and express that truth in our lives.

The key to aliveness is authenticity. When we are remembering and being true to who we really are, the flow of Life Force energy is released from within. It flows through us and into our lives.

We experience a sense of connection within ourselves, with Life and with others. We are available for inspiration. Our direction comes from within. We take inspired actions. We experience vitality and passion. We are in the flow of Life.

The Secret of Life…

Now I will tell you the Secret of Life.

The secret of life is to be and do more of what makes you come alive. That which increases the flow of Life through you. And let go of what stops the flow.

What is it that you must be and do to feel fully alive? Begin now and experience the exquisite aliveness that awaits you…

Step Into Your Greatness Now! Be and do more of what makes you come alive.

Subliminal Music and Your Personal Development

Mind power is all about music, and let me tell you about one of the best examples of how you can look into this. For one thing, when you are talking about being able to study well, some experts have also said that when you study, you should be listening to the music that you like, because it activates the areas of the brain that allow you to retain information and learn better. Now this is just one example of the kind of application that subliminal music actually came from and you can actually go further into this topic.

For one thing, music has healing properties, and this is something that we already know about and have established for ourselves. Knowing that there is always a change that music can actually affect the cortical of the mind, we then know that there are ways to use it to our own advantage. But the problem has always been to know which kind of music which will actually wake up part of the mind and the subconscious mind, and this really was a kind of a guessing game that had been going on for a while now. What you need to understand is that when you are doing this, what you need to know is that personal development was and is all about research.

For example, we now know that the power of the subconscious mind also lies upon the electromagnetic waves that are all around the brain, and when you consider this, we have fond a key and a method to actually unlock the power of the mind for ourselves. But of course normal music does not have the ability to do this, and even if it does, it applies only to those that actually like the sound track in the first place. It is very hard to stimulate someone who actually does not like the music that they are being exposed to and this is what we are talking about.

So, there has to be an engineered method where specific messages that were designed to be picked up by the subliminal mind, be engaged and embedded into universally and proven relaxing music, which can range from nature sounds to engineered sounds that had been placed in a controlled environment. What you need to know is that when you are looking at your own personal development, you need to take into account factors that you need to embed subliminal messages that go past the defences of the logical and critical thought processes.

What happens is that when this happens, the subconscious mind will pick up these messages and will, after some time, inculcate the messages into the matrix of the mind. So, these are some of the things you need to look at when you are talking about the power of personal development and how music that has been engineered to help you. The good thing is that you would be able to get some sort of help online and off line as well.
