Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) And Depression (Thinking Errors)
October 31, 2009 by Administrator
The basic tenet of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is that what you think affects the way you feel. That is to say, if you think depressive thoughts then you will feel depressed. Conversely, if you manage to stop yourself thinking these thoughts, then your depression will lift.
As a psychiatrist who uses CBT techniques, my first step is to look for unhelpful patterns of thinking with my clients. Depressed people often think in particular ways that are very different from non-depressed people. These ways of thinking are called – in CBT language – “thinking errors”. Thinking errors help to cause and then maintain depression.
Numerous different thinking errors have been identified by CBT therapists over the years, and particular kinds of errors seem to predispose to particular psychological problems. In my experience as a therapist, the most common errors found in depression are “All-or-Nothing” thinking, “Mental Filtering”, “Disqualifying the Positive”, and “Personalising”.
“All-or-Nothing” thinking (also known in CBT circles as “Black-or-White” thinking) emphasises extremes and ignores the fact that most things in life are shades of grey rather than absolutes. For example, a person thinking in this way may play one poor game of tennis and then decide that he’s totally useless and give up forever. Or she may miss one yoga class and tell herself that as she’s fallen behind, there’s no point in going back. “All-or-Nothing” thinking sets very rigid rules for a person to live by – rules that, if broken (as they almost inevitably are!) can lead to the abandonment of enjoyable and worthwhile activities, and predispose the person to depression.
“Mental Filtering” is the term applied to the thinking patterns of people who “see” the world in a depressive way. People with this thinking error are biased in what they take notice of, and what they later remember. They will tend to notice (or, in CBT parlance, “attend”) to objects, people, or events that “fit-in” or confirm their previously held beliefs. For example, a depressed person who thinks that the world is an unpleasant place to live is more likely to remember the sad news stories as compared to a non-depressed person. A depressed person who thinks that they’re unlikeable will take extra notice of possible sleights from others. CBT theory posits that such mental filtering reinforces a person’s depression.
A closely related thinking error is termed “Disqualifying the Positive”. As well as focusing on the negative features of the world (and themselves), depressed people will often actively ignore (or “disqualify”) evidence to the contrary. A depressed person may well recall the person at the party who ignored them, but he will forget or downplay the others who chatted to him for hours. If a CBT therapist asked them about this, he will often say things like “oh, they just felt sorry for me”, thereby turning a positive interaction into something very different.
“Personalising” is the term given to a type of thinking that places the person at the centre of events. Such a view of the universe places a huge burden on the persons shoulders – they can feel responsible for all the bad things that happen. You may be “Personalising” when you feel guilty about not being able to help an unemployed friend keep his house, or when reading about climate change due to our Western way of living. There are factors beyond your control and for which you should not take responsibility. If you do, then CBT hypothesises that you will experience feelings of guilt, shame, and ultimately depression.
The above is a brief review of the common thinking errors that I have come across during the course of my work as a therapist in Edinburgh. Identifying such errors with the client is a first step on the way to identifying other, healthier, ways of thinking.

How To Overcome Fear of Flying
October 31, 2009 by Administrator

A fear of flying is in this day and age extremely restricting. So many people these days enjoy a lifestyle which involves flying almost as frequently as we used to take taxis. Many jobs are dependent upon flying on a regular basis, be it a short internal flight or one which involves sitting on an airplane for up to twenty hours.
A fear of flying can take many forms; one individual may be quite comfortable on a small plane but petrified on a jumbo, whilst the opposite may be true for another person. The symptoms experienced can vary from a tension which is bearable (just) to full blown panic attacks which even prevent a person from going anywhere remotely near to an airport. You may feel less uptight in an aisle seat, whilst someone else will only contemplate flying if a window seat is guaranteed. Sometimes the sounds which a plane makes can trigger anxiety, whilst at other times it may be the sensations or the sights.
Everyone’s fear of flying is different in terms of what triggers it and how you instinctively react. The degree of anxiety or panic experienced varies from one person to another. I have met people who could not even bear to look at a plane in the sky without experiencing a knee jerk reaction which sent them in search of a place to hide.
However you experience your fear of flying phobia, it is something which is very uncomfortable and it places undue stress upon both your psyche and your lifestyle. No matter how deeply you experience a fear of flying phobia, this response can be changed. A phobia is something which is learned, not something which you are born with. It is the result of an automatic program which is running at the back of your mind.
This is why fear of flying hypnotherapy is so successful. With hypnosis you gain access to the inner workings of your mind and deep rooted beliefs, habits and phobias can be changed with relative ease. Hypnosis is easy to learn and easy to use with the help of a hypnosis recording. You can learn how to retrain your mind to overcome your fear of flying and feel comfortable on airplanes with the help of hypnosis.

Why are Good Luck Items, such as candles, incense, lucky coins, and so forth, always described as being “for entertainment purposes only” every time you see them sold somewhere? Well, because even though they often do bring somebody good luck or good fortune, or success, they don’t always have that effect, and they should never be used to replace any sort of medical, legal, or professional help.
Sometimes Good Luck Charms have an enormous effect on the life of the person carrying or wearing them, and since the success is not guaranteed, it is safe to always have a disclaimer!

Self-Fulfilling Prophecies – How Do They Fit Into Our Lives?
October 31, 2009 by Administrator

This happens often with parents and their children. Parents may say of one child, ‘He’s smart; he’ll go to university.’ Very likely this will happen because the child, after hearing this prophecy many times, comes to believe it and will work towards it. Another parent may say of their 1 1/2 year old toddler, ‘He’ll do well in sports; look at how well he kicks that ball.’ The child in all probability will be given sports equipment to play with at a young age and will be placed early onto a sports team. Or, ‘He’s always such a klutz; he continually trips over his own feet.’ If children hear this often enough, they will come to believe that’s what they do and the prophecy will likely prove to be true. And if a child is constantly being told that he’s forgetful, there is no necessity for him to remember because he’s known for forgetting and no one expects anything different. Of if a child hears himself always described as being shy, he may make no effort to be anything other than shy because he has never been expected to be outgoing.
There are many of these types of prophecies and parents are the worst culprits. They do their children a disservice by setting them on a path where there may be no validity to the implied truths of their prophecies. A child may be forced to play a sport with no love for the game because of their parents’ belief. A child may wish to take a trade but feel their parents must be right about going to university – after all, they’ve said so their whole life.
But the prophecies do not have to be negative; they can act as positives in programming ourselves for better and happier futures. We may tell all that we intend to become an actor or an actress. If we truly believe that we can be, we will work with determination and perseverance towards our goal. As a result, our prophecy very likely will come true. The same may be true of anything else we have decided to do as long as we are determined to accomplish our goal.
Self-fulfilling prophecies can change our lives either positively or negatively but as with everything else, ultimately we have the choice as to how we live our lives. The question will be: How strongly do we believe?

Think and Grow Rich—Leaders and Attributes of Leadership
October 30, 2009 by Administrator
Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich” states, “It is no disgrace to be a follower. On the other hand, it is no credit to remain a follower. Most great leaders began in the capacity of followers”. In this article we will be discussing leaders and reviewing the major attributes of leadership.
Leaders may indeed be born as such; however, many more began as “intelligent followers” to use Mr. Hill’s terminology. A person of this type is more likely to develop into a leader themselves.
The experience gained by an intelligent follower from a knowledgeable leader is priceless.
What are the major attributes of a leader?
- Unwavering courage based upon their confidence in themselves and their occupation.
- Self-control which enables them to set the example that their intelligent followers will emulate.
- Justice in their judgments and the ability to be fair-minded.
- Definiteness of decision based on their self-assurance.
- Definiteness of plans to ensure that they and their followers stay on course.
- Willingness to do more than they ask of their followers regardless of compensation.
- Personality that naturally commands the respect of their followers.
- Sympathy and understanding when their followers encounter problems.
- Attentiveness to details.
- Willingness to assume responsibility for mistakes stemming from their follower’s incompetence.
- Spirit of cooperation with their followers resulting in a cooperative effort by all.
Napoleon Hill categorized leadership as either by consent, or by force. As the two categories indicate, followers would either follow with or without their personal consent and sympathy.
It was his opinion, and most will undoubtedly agree, that leading with the consent and sympathy of the followers is preferable for all concerned.
It was also his opinion that leading by force would soon give way to leading by consent. His vision of the future role of leaders was that it would be vastly different, at least as it would pertain to the business world. We have yet to totally realize his vision.
Why should we aspire to be a leader?
In the context of Mr. Hill’s steps toward riches, leadership, as a way of marketing one’s personal services, is one way of compensation for services rendered. If a monetary compensation is not possible, our service would be a way of “paying back” those we owe directly, or indirectly as in “giving back” to a community.
Very few of us get very far on our own. Most of us, at one time or another has had to seek out strong, knowledgeable and effective leaders. We learn to lead by following the leaders.
The world is continually looking for those who are qualified and willing to assume the role.
“This necessity may be your opportunity”, Napoleon Hill, “Think and Grow Rich”.

How to Start Conversations With People You Have Met For the First Time
October 30, 2009 by Administrator
Many people dread the thought of attending an event where they know no one. In fact, such people often opt to invite a friend or two to accompany them to the function.
Fear of being rejected makes people to avoid starting a conversation with a stranger. Having little knowledge of a specific subject may also make someone to find it difficult to strike a conversation.
My advice would be to use the power of a smile. Most people warm up to a smile. You can then greet the person you are meeting and introduce yourself. For example, you can say, ‘Good Morning, my name is Samantha.’ Most often than not the stranger will respond to your greeting and may also be glad that you broke the ice.
You need to be alert so that you can observe, hear, detect or feel the tone and contents of the information that you gather from the persons you are trying to make conversations with. Some comments you make may seem offensive depending on the body language and verbal answers that you get.
Be very courteous, show respect to any opinions that the strangers share and drop a joke where necessary to ease the tension if any. If it is a business function, carry your business cards and share them as this may be the start of a long term business relationship or friendship.
Practice makes perfect. The more you interact with strangers, the more confident you get and the easier it is for you to make new friends, business partners and acquaintances.

10 Easy Ways to Fail As a Leader
October 29, 2009 by Administrator
There are undoubtedly more ways to fail as a leader and there are probably even easier ways than the ones I will highlight. But, just in case someone is compiling a list of really effective methods of leadership failure, I thought I would contribute these.
In all honesty the seed idea comes from several books I have recently read. The embellishments and comments are from own personal experiences and observations.
As a result of my experience, 40+ working years, I can vouch for their effectiveness.
10 easy ways to fail:
- Unorganized. There are lots of good ideas but no detailed plan. The “devil is in the details” is the way the old saying goes. The result is confusion.
- Unwilling to serve. There are leaders who don’t mind instructing or even commanding, but they won’t, or don’t, do as they say.
- Unwilling to work. Leadership should be rewarded according to what it produces. It’s not what you know, but what you do with that knowledge that counts.
- Fear of follower competition. A lack of security causes some people to attempt to limit their follower’s or team’s knowledge, skills or education.
- Unimaginative. There is a lack of creativity to expand or meet challenges in some people. At the first sign of opposition they stall and shutdown. Their own and the whole team’s efforts are now in jeopardy.
- Selfish. This is the flaw in the leader that loves the credit, (the positive kind), and the limelight. They are reluctant to share the victory. It’s the, “me, me, me I did it” syndrome.
- Intemperance. Usually associated with alcohol, this really means a lack of moderation. When any area of a person’s life is out of balance and control, it will often affect their behavior and performance, and so the team’s.
- Disloyal or untrustworthy. This is a serious character flaw that can result in a loss of all creditability. Persons of this type can not be trusted and may be backstabbers or even liars.
- Unduly forceful. This situation exists when a person has forgotten that followers follow best voluntarily, when there is mutual respect.
- Love of title. A love of rank and position sometimes causes a person, in their pride, to think they are somehow above their followers.
In this day and age leadership, I believe, is changing and will have to continue to do so, especially in the areas of free enterprise. Leaders of a poor caliber are unproductive and therefore unprofitable in modern economies, especially in large scale operations.
I, for one, am not sorry to see the old ways begin to go. As I stated earlier these (10) ways are very effective and are known to produce negative side effects.
I’ll trust that anyone can take it from here and easily deduce at least (10) easy ways not to fail as a leader.

Think and Grow Rich—Persistence, The Eighth Step Toward Riches
October 29, 2009 by Administrator
Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich”, declares, “Persistence is the essential factor in the procedure of transmuting desire into its monetary equivalent”. We all have desires. Some may even have great will power. But, do you have the ruthlessness that is required to achieve your riches?
Many will optimistically begin by translating their “wish” into a desire. A few will define their desire as a definite goal. Fewer yet will construct a plan for pursuing their goal as outlined by Mr. Hill. And lastly, rare is the man or woman that will persist, the required length of time necessary to be successful.
This is the critical question that will really determine your commitment. How long do you intend to persist in the process to achieve your goals?
- Days
- Weeks
- Months
- Years
Here is where the “wheat is separated from the chaff’, the weak from the strong, the poverty conscious from the money conscious. Our intentions and commitment at this point will very likely determine our end results.
Napoleon Hill states it this way, “Lack of persistence is one of the major causes of failure’.
An honest evaluation of ourselves will determine whether or not we are persistent by nature. It’s fairly easy to determine, you can do your own self analysis.
Do you tend to give up or give in before you succeed? If the answer is yes, let’s continue with Mr. Hill’s outline.
How to develop persistence:
- Define your purpose.
- Define your plan and put it into action.
- Close your mind to all negative influences from all sources.
- Ally with those who will provide positive influence and encouragement
According to Mr. Hill, those who will continue to persist will be those who follow these steps. Those who choose to ignore them will have very little chance of success.
It’s not easy to persist when there is little at stake. If you are finding it difficult to be persistent in your plans and actions, your dream may be too small or your desire too weak.
Originating in the mind, the ability to persist is directly related to our intensity of desire. This ability may then be developed to the point of becoming a habit or even a characteristic.
For any of us that lack this habit, it can be developed, and should be developed!
According to Mr. Hill, the habit of being persistent is possibly one of the best protections against failure.
“Those who have cultivated the habit of persistence seem to enjoy insurance against failure”, Napoleon Hill, “Think and grow Rich”.

Wearing Perfume is Good For Your Self Confidence
October 28, 2009 by Administrator
There are countless reasons for you to wear perfume. Some reasons could be to lift your mood, to make you feel happier or to cover up an odd body odor. But mostly, women hunt down and anoint their bodies with top rated perfume in order to catch the attention of men. It can take years to discern the best ladies’ perfume for you – one that both you like and guys like, too. You in all probability don’t want to go through years of testing and making choice mistakes before finding the right scent. You can also make the best ladies’ perfume for you by tipping human pheromones into your preferred scent.
On the other hand, you don’t have to worry about smelling bad and can still party in the luxury of a good scent. You just need to get your top perfume for your body from beauty care items rather than perfume. A body lotion, deodorant, body mist or even a shampoo might give you simply enough scent to make you, your wallet and your head content.
A top perfume for you is one that makes you feel better about yourself. You can’t in truth do that if you’re worried about how much you’ve paid for a couple of ounces of a perfume that looks like watered-down beer. Many individual noses can’t tell the difference between copycat designer perfumes and the “real thing”. Why should you pay the price just for a label on a little bottle?
Some women may find that a scent could trigger headaches or allergies from a shampoo bottle, body butter or even their lip gloss. A good number of cosmetics and health care products are made with scents, with the intention of being appealing. Some of these products give a delicate but long lasting perfume. Just be sure you have a big stick handy when you find the best scent for you.
If you’ve searched far and wide for that perfect fragrance within your means, you might want to go just one step further online. On the Web, you can find hundreds of great, reasonably priced brand name fragrances. But, prior to going shopping for a fragrance online, you must know which one best complements you.
It is a fact that each fragrance will produce a different scent on different types of skin. For instance, a fragrance that smells amazing on your friend may not blend well with your skin type. Each skin type differs in the level of oil; some skin is constantly oily while some other is constantly dry. Those with dry skin might also have to use lots of lotion on their skin, which can also have an effect on the scent of a fragrance. What an individual eats and drinks, the environment where they live, and the scents that they live around with most often can all influence how a fragrance will smell on their skin.
If you decide to walk into a department store and smell more than a few fragrances, please keep in mind that the scent will likely be different once you take a fragrance out of the store. Perfume fragrances tend to blend with others in the store. Also, the same fragrance has been in one environment at a steady temperature and humidity level. When you take it home, you are introducing it to a whole new atmosphere. As a result, the scent might be stronger or weaker than in the store.
So concluding, pay attention to which fragrances suit you best so it can be suiting not only for yourself but for others that are near you too.

Understanding Psychic Abilities
October 28, 2009 by Administrator
Although a lot of controversies presiding over the subject of Psychic, there are people who strongly believe in such ability or as others would love to put it – gift. There are even some who believe that every individual has psychic abilities. You just have to discover it and hone it. However, there are also some who perceive that it is a rare gift and only unique individuals have it. No matter what perception you might have about this subject, the mere fact that it is being practiced, believed in and even studied by experts are reasons enough to say that it exists and its power cannot be ignored.
The term “psychic” is referred to as the ability to perceive sorts of information that are hidden from one’s normal senses. Thus it is also called extrasensory perception. People who are capable of this make use of their minds and senses to influence everything around them physically. Perhaps you have already heard about telekinesis, numerology, fortune telling, Tarot readings and mental telepathy. All these fall under this subject and there are virtually many other topics that encompass the term.
Some critics attribute these unique skills or psychic powers to self-delusion or somewhat a form of intentional trickery. Still, there are some people who claim that extrasensory perception (ESP) had been scientifically demonstrated in various circumstances; in general, people are just too busy to notice them or they simply choose to ignore them but they exist and they happen to a lot of people every single day.
Those who study psychic abilities undergo psychic developments and at the same time, recognize the forces that exist around them. They can explain various circumstances in a deeper perspective never before recognized by ordinary individuals. In short, everything in this world has a cause and a meaning. Nothing just happens by coincidence or by chance. Nature, external forces and the power that surrounds human beings make things happen: thus, unexpected events unfold and lives significantly change. If the people involved need to understand why certain things happened to them and they need to know as well how can they deal with those, they can consult a psychic.
There are people who claim themselves as gifted with psychic abilities. They may have the power to release positive energies among humans to make their lives better. They may also have the ability foresee unexpected events or foretell one’s future. Hence, one can prepare for what’s coming or find ways as early as possible to prevent them from coming. Some psychics can also see past events. This ability can help one understand why certain things are occurring at present.
In its broadest sense, psychic ability is not limited to one skill alone. It can manifest in different forms. Some psychics can directly connect with the spiritual world and get information directly from their guides or any other type of source. Some use tools such as symbols, cards and so on in order to come up with accurate readings and predictions.
